The appearance of strange human faces in Belmez began on August 23, 1971, when Maria Gomez Camara ― wife of Juan Pereira and a housemaker ― complained that a human face was formed on her concrete kitchen floor. Her husband destroyed the picture with a pickaxe only to have it reappear on the floor. The mayor of Belmez prohibited the destruction of the image and instead the concrete floor was cut and taken for study.

For the next 30 years, the Pereira family claimed that faces continued to appear of both male and female and of different shapes and sizes. Later, when the floor of the house was dug, it was found to contain the remains of humans. It was speculated that a graveyard existed underneath the house. Read More

In 1957, two sisters, Joanna, 11, and Jacqueline, 6, Pollock were killed in a tragic car accident. A year later, their mother gave birth to twins, Jennifer and Gillian. Then it gets weird. Jennifer, the younger twin, had scars and birthmarks on her body that were identical to Jacqueline’s, the younger deceased sister. The twins began to ask for toys that had belonged to the deceased girl’s toys they had no knowledge of!

They stated one day that they wanted to go to a park they’d never been to before (but Joanna and Jacqueline had). In one instance, their mother watched them play a game in which Jennifer laid on the floor with her head in Gillian’s lap, pretending that she was dying. Her sister said, “The blood’s coming out of your eyes. That’s where the car hit you.” But their parents hadn’t discussed the accident with the girls ever.

This led psychologist Dr. Ian Stevenson to conclude that it was likely the twins were reincarnations of their sisters. Apparently, at age 5, the odd behaviour stopped along with any sign that they were connected to their departed sisters and Jennifer and Gillian grew up as normal, happy kids. Read More

When dolls age they tend to look quite creepy: hair falls out, colour fades, cracks appear and, at times, the eyes go missing. It’s a natural process that comes with time and neglect. But this doll is different. A couple, who had children, one birthday or Christmas they bought their young daughter a doll. Although the doll had been well played with it was still in a rather good condition when it was placed in an attic and forgotten about. Eleven years later, the family was having a cleanout of the attic when they stumbled across this rather odd-looking doll. The doll was wrinkled and aged like a person does, though much more rapidly. Therefore it has led many to believe it to be a haunted living doll.

28 | The Villisca Axe Murders

Moore family was murdered in this house.

On the night of June 10, 1912, in the quiet town of Villisca, Iowa, the Moore family returned from a night at church. The two parents and their four children, plus two girls from a neighbouring family who were sleeping over, settled down to sleep.

The next morning, the neighbours found all eight of them hacked to death with an axe. There was no sign of forced entry, and only one child was found out of bed. It’s believed that the murderer had climbed into the attic while they were at church and waited for everyone to fall asleep before coming downstairs to commit the crime. One of the only clues was a pile of cigarette butts in the attic.

Though there have been several suspects over the years – a bitter business partner, a suspected lover, a travelling preacher (who confessed but didn’t know any details of the crime scene), and more than one drifter – the case has never been solved. The house is supposedly haunted by both the family and the man who committed the crimes!

On a remote island off the coast of Scotland, three lighthouse keepers lived and worked in a peaceful environment. On December 26, 1900, a supply ship arrived and found the island eerily deserted. From a diary found inside the abandoned lighthouse, they began to piece together a strange and still unsolved mystery.

Two of the three waterproof coats were missing. Dinner was left, half-eaten, on the table. The log described a great and terrible storm, one that had terrified one of the keepers into muteness and reduced another to inconsolable tears. They sat together while the storm raged. The thought is that the three of them were swept out to sea during the storm, never to be seen or heard from again.

But why wouldn’t they have been safe in the lighthouse? Why would a storm, even a bad one, reduce such seasoned mariners to tears? Why would one of them have left the lighthouse without a coat in December, and why would all three have left their post together?

They refused to eat anything but raw beans.

The boy died shortly after but the girl grew up to lose her green colour, and learned to speak English. She explained that they came from a land with no sunlight, called St. Martin’s Land. An English rescue team arrived on Roanoke in 1590, but found only a single word carved in a tree by the abandoned town, as depicted in this 19th century illustration. Archaeologists hope to pinpoint the site of the long-elusive town. Image Credit: Wikimedia

In 1587, John White led a group of people from Britain to found an English colony, settling on Roanoke Island, one of a chain of barrier islands now known as the Outer Banks of North Carolina. White left for more supplies, but on his return three years later, he found the colony meticulously abandoned, with all houses and fortifications dismantled with care.

Before he’d left the colony, White had instructed the colonists that if they were taken by force, they were to carve a cross into a nearby tree. But there was no cross. The only clue was the word “Croatoan,” the name of a native tribe allied with the English, which was carved into a post. White took this to mean that the colonists had moved to Croatoan Island which is now known as Hatteras.

Ensuing investigations turned up claims that the colonists had been slaughtered by the Powhatan tribe, but there is no archaeological evidence of this, and a recent re-examination of the primary sources indicates that any massacre that occurred was not of this particular group of colonists, but rather a group of colonists who had arrived earlier. More enduring theories involve integration between the colonists and the Croatoans or other local tribes, but so far, no DNA evidence has positively identified any descendants of the colony. Scientists still can’t explain these enigmatic mysteries.

Before she died, Ramirez’s body released mysterious toxic fumes that made several hospital employees fatally ill. She is known as the ‘toxic lady’ and scientists still don’t agree on any of the theories as to what could’ve caused this. Her remains are buried in an unmarked grave.

Many concluded the event saying, the medical staff had suffered from mass hysteria or stress. But the medical staff at the hospital were not so convinced with this conclusion and they urged the coroner’s office to take a closer look at the file. Then the assistant deputy director, Pat Grant, made a startling conclusion.

According to Grant, Ramirez covered her skin from head to toe in DMSO, or dimethyl sulfone, as a possible way to cure her late-stage cervical cancer. Though medical science labeled DMSO a toxic substance in 1965, research in the early 1960s led doctors to believe that DMSO could relieve pain and reduce anxiety.

When it is exposed to oxygen, the substance (DMSO) converts to dimethyl sulfate. As a gas, dimethyl sulfate vapors destroy cells in people’s eyes, lungs, and mouth. When this vapor gets into the body, it can cause convulsions, delirium, and paralysis. These types of symptoms were also seen in the sick medical staff.

This theory adds up to the facts of the case. DMSO cream would explain the cream that doctors noted on Ramirez’s skin. It would also explain the fruity or garlicky odour coming from her mouth. However, the family of Gloria Ramirez firmly denied that she had ever used DMSO. And thus the whole event is shrouded in conflict and mystery both.

The Sweating Sickness
44 creepy unsolved mysteries that will chill you to the bone! 48

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the English sweating sickness epidemics struck England and later continental Europe, killing thousands of people. Then the strange disease apparently vanished. The contagious disease came on suddenly and could kill within hours. The cause and disease itself remains unknown.

The toxic Oakville blobs
44 creepy unsolved mysteries that will chill you to the bone! 49

“Tiny toxic blobs of goo” rained down in Oakville, Washington multiple times in August 1994. In the aftermath, many residents came down with the same mysterious flu. Under analysis, the “perplexing precipitation” proved to contain human white blood cells, but was otherwise unidentifiable. What’s more, nobody could figure out how it got up in the sky in the first place. Was it human waste expelled from an airliner? The Federal Aviation Administration was able to rule that out. Was it, as many locals believed, a secret military test of some kind?? All these questions are still shrouded in mystery.

Spontaneous human combustion (SHC) is the concept of the combustion of a living or recently deceased human body without an apparent external source of ignition. This phenomenon is still unsolved to modern scientists. There are a few examples of SHC, some of which are given below:

Mary Reeser’s body was found almost totally cremated by police on 2nd July of 1951. While the body was cremated where Reeser sat the apartment was relatively damage-free. Her remains completely burned into ash, with only one leg remaining. Her chair was also destroyed. Detectives found her temperature to be around 3,500°F. Some speculate Reeser spontaneously combusted. However, Reeser’s death is still unsolved.

A similar case took place on 28th March of 1970 when Margaret Hogan, an 89-year-old widow who lived alone in a house on Prussia Street, Dublin, Ireland, was found burned almost to the point of complete destruction. The surroundings were almost untouched. Her two feet, and both legs from below the knees, were undamaged. An inquest, held on 3 April 1970, recorded her death by burning, with the cause of the fire listed as “unknown”.

Another case took place on 15th September of 1982, when Jeannie Saffin eventually wrapped into flames while sitting on a chair. Her father, who was the witness of this incident, says he saw flashlight came out of his eyes corner and hands. Then he saw Jeannie covered into flames and didn’t cry or move even. While the investigation was going on, police found no reason for Jeannie’s combustion. There was no sign of burning in the house except Jeannie’s body. The cause of her death is still unknown.
